Dynamic Diabetes is an Exercise Physiologist run supportive group class to people with Type 2 Diabetes, working towards similar goals. This Medicare subsidised program focuses on progressive exercise over 8-weeks and education surrounding the role of exercise in blood glucose regulation.
Exercise is particularly important for individuals with Type 2 diabetes as it can have significant benefits for managing the condition. Here's how exercise can specifically impact Type 2 diabetes:
Improves Insulin Sensitivity: Regular physical activity increases insulin sensitivity, allowing cells to more effectively utilize glucose from the bloodstream. This helps to lower blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance, a key characteristic of Type 2 diabetes.
Lowers Blood Sugar Levels: Exercise helps muscles to absorb glucose from the bloodstream, leading to a decrease in blood sugar levels. This effect can last for several hours after exercise, contributing to improved overall blood sugar control.
Aids in Weight Management: Many individuals with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, which can worsen insulin resistance and blood sugar control. Exercise plays a crucial role in weight management by burning calories, increasing metabolism, and promoting fat loss.
Reduces Cardiovascular Risk: Type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular exercise can improve heart health by lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels, and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Enhances Mental Well-being: Exercise has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common among people with Type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity can improve mood, increase energy levels, and enhance overall well-being.
Increases Energy Levels: Engaging in regular exercise can boost energy levels and reduce fatigue, allowing individuals with Type 2 diabetes to better manage daily activities and maintain a more active lifestyle.
Improves Blood Circulation: Exercise promotes better blood circulation, which can help prevent complications associated with Type 2 diabetes, such as nerve damage, poor wound healing, and peripheral artery disease.
When incorporating exercise into a Type 2 diabetes management plan, it's important to start slowly and gradually increase intensity and duration over time. Consulting with our Exercise Physiologists will help to develop a personalized exercise plan tailored to individual needs and goals, taking into account any existing health conditions or complications associated with Type 2 diabetes.
