Eldercise is a Physiotherapist run group class aimed at improving patient health and well-being, and improving independence in daily activities. Exercises are tailored to individual goals, to target key areas in strength, balance and endurance, taking into account any current, previous or preventable medical conditions.
Regular exercise becomes increasingly important as we age for several reasons:
Maintaining Physical Function: Regular exercise helps preserve muscle mass, strength, and flexibility, which are essential for maintaining mobility and independence as we age. It enables us to continue performing daily activities and reduces the risk of functional limitations.
Preventing Chronic Diseases: Engaging in regular physical activity can help prevent or manage various chronic conditions commonly associated with aging, including heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer.
Improving Cardiovascular Health: Exercise strengthens the heart and improves circulation, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. It helps lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Maintaining Bone Health: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises stimulate bone remodeling and help maintain bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures as we age.
Enhancing Mental Well-being: Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline in older adults. It promotes the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that elevate mood, and improves cognitive function and overall mental well-being.
Managing Weight and Body Composition: Physical activity helps regulate metabolism, control body weight, and maintain muscle mass while reducing body fat. This is particularly important as metabolism naturally slows with age, making weight management more challenging.
Improving Balance and Coordination: Exercises that focus on balance, stability, and coordination help reduce the risk of falls and fall-related injuries, which are common concerns for older adults. Maintaining good balance is crucial for preserving mobility and independence.
Promoting Social Engagement: Participating in group exercise classes or recreational activities provides opportunities for social interaction and community engagement, which are important for mental and emotional well-being, especially as social networks may shrink with age.
